汉武帝时，李陵是一名勇将。他善骑射，被任命为骑都尉。后来，匈奴发兵进犯，他自告奋勇前去抗击。他率兵5000，抗击匈奴八万骑兵。几经交战，终因弹尽粮绝。李陵不幸被俘。汉武帝十分愤怒，下令将李陵全家抄斩。太史令司马迁为他伸张正义，据理辩护，汉武帝恼羞成怒，对司马迁施以酷刑。司马迁悲愤交集，曾想一死了之。又一想自己这样死去，与九牛亡一毛一样，毫无意义。于是他奋发图强，写出《史记》这部不朽之作。九牛一毛，就是许多牛身上的一根毛比喻极大数量中的极少数微不足道。
