　　故事的主人公里戈莱托貌丑背驼，在宫廷里当一名弄臣。年轻貌美的曼图亚公爵专以玩弄女性为乐，而里戈莱托常为公爵出谋，帮他干勾引朝臣妻女的勾当，引起人们的愤恨，大家定计对他进行报复，让他不自觉地参加诱拐自己心爱女儿吉尔达。 　　里戈莱托发现自己竟将女儿交给公爵后，决定雇刺客杀死公爵。当他从刺客手中接过装有尸体的口袋，以为大功已成时，忽闻公爵高歌之声，急忙打开口袋，发现里面装的是奄奄一息的女儿，这使他痛苦万分。原来，这个获悉行刺计划的少女对虚情假意的公爵一往情深，甘愿为爱情而替公爵一死。
