　　北宋年末，金兵大举侵犯中原，掳掠了北宋徽宗、钦宗二帝，社会动荡不安，朝廷只得偏安江南，拥戴赵钧（高宗）为帝。 　　中原汤阴人氏岳飞精忠报国，在民间招募义勇军抵抗金兵，在河南朱仙镇大败金兀术率领的数万大军，准备迎接二帝回朝。但高宗无意迎接父兄返朝，听信奸相秦桧的谗言，招岳飞进京，秦桧罗织“莫须有”的罪名将岳飞父子害死于风波亭。
